Recuperar a juventude perdida é ambição antiga. Imperadores, exploradores, alquimistas - muitos procuraram o segredo da juventude nos mais recônditos cantos do mundo. Longe de saber que ele está afinal tão perto, dentro das nossas células.

Uma equipa liderada por um investigador luso-descendente, Ronald DePinho, reverteu o processo de envelhecimento em ratinhos de laboratório geneticamente modificados e transformou numa extraordinária conquista da ciência o que era até então ficção científica.

Os animais, que no início da experiência tinham uma condição física equivalente à de alguém na casa dos 90 anos, recuperaram capacidades cognitivas, voltaram a ser férteis, recuperaram o olfacto, a visão, o vigor. Foi como se o tempo andasse para trás e os devolvesse aos 40 anos.

Os resultados da experiência surpreenderam os próprios investigadores, que antecipavam apenas um abrandamento do processo de envelhecimento. E abrem caminhos de pesquisa que antes nem seriam ponderados.
